Dog salons abound in St Petersburg

It's rather interesting to see all the new businesses opening in a declining economy. Here in St Petersburg Florida there are a number of dog salons opening.

The Tampa Bay Business Journal this week wrote about the opening of "Gone to the Dogs Boutique & Grooming on Corey Avenue in downtown St Pete Beach Florida. Recently Best Buddies Dog Boutique opened at 400 Beach.

This week Wags Dog Salon, Grooming and Day Care opens next door to us, ALVA International, Inc. a real estate brokerage, on Beach Drive NE in downtown St Petersburg.

HI Sharon. Well at least the pooches there in your area are still being treated well in a down economy.

Hi Sharon, I am delighted as there is always a need to make our little ones reach their full appearance potential. I was in the desert in a very upscale retail area and the higher end shops are closing all up and down the streets. I saw this once before in the 90's but this time with so many less people in these upscale tourist areas we are likely to see even more shops closing. Now coupled with that there is rumblings I am hearing at the state level with new heavy tax proposals, it certainly will not help the situation.

Brian - it was more a comment on the vagaries of the economy. The 3 examples were only very recent local events.

Gary - yes, a lot of money is spent on pooches.

William - we need to watch what happens with taxes in California as Florida follows soon after. As to pets, I think it's not only for appearance - many people have learned animal massage therapy as well.

Sharon, good to see you back posting on a regular basis! As you know Austin is a very pet friendly city too and I guess you could say we have "gone to the dogs" too!

Russell - now that I've finished furniture shopping for the new office, I should have more time for posting regularly. It was like being away from home.

Sharon, my favorite groomer was a place called "Dog Wash" that was in such a funky neighborhood that their van would pick up the pooch at your home or office.  That was a couple of years ago.  Now their corner is luxury condos and the neighborhood is now formerly funky.

Pat - we have lots of mobile dog groomers here. I don't think it's because of funky neighborhoods, but either 1) it's more convenient for the dog owner than going out; or b) it's less expensive for the groomer than renting fixed space.
