I'm in the process of reading Malcolm Gladwell's newest book, Outliers. It makes some interesting points - why do certain people excel? Perhaps because of when they're born. Not in terms of horoscopes, but in terms of when they're born in relation to deadlines. It affect sports stars as well as children in school.
Gladwell previously wrote The Tipping Point and Blink. This one is quite interesting, so far. I read it every morning on my Kindle while on the treadmill.

I am going to go get this book on cd so I can see what it is all about. (Not sure what a Kindle is but I bet I can't use it while doing Body Pump).
Thanks for the tip.....I am trying to read "Shift" but have been too busy.....wish I could have found it on cd to play in my car.
Hi Sharon, what do you mean by "in terms of when they are born in relation to deadlines"?
Thanks for mentioning this. I didn't realize Gladwell had a new book out. I've read Blink but not Tipping Point.
I will have to check it out! Thanks for the heads-up! Merry Christmas!
Hi Sharon,
I have read The Tipping Point and loved it and would recommend it to any one interested in learning about cause and affect.
hi Sharon, I'm just stopping by to send you all my best wishes for the holidays and a wonderful 2009! I just saw Malcolm Gladwell on Charlie Rose (PBS) last week, very interesting concept!
Julie - the Kindle is amazon's electronic book reader, and I read it on the treadmill as well as everywhere else.
Shirley - if the cutoff date for playing socker is December 31st (i.e. you have to be born that year to play in a particular league) then those born in January - who are older and thus have had more time to develop physically and emotionally - have an advantage over those born in October. If the cutoff date for school entrance is that you must be 6 years old by Labor Day Sept 4, those children born in September of the previous year will have the advantage over those born in August of the current year. And since those do better the first year, they're treated better, get the better coaches/teachers, have more opportunity to practice, etc.
Debbie - give yourself a Kindle for Christmas and keep all of Gladwell's books on it for reference.
Barbara-Jo - Merry Christmas to you, too.
Mark - Gladwell makes us think about things from a new perspective.
marti - Thank you for your good wishes. I'll have to see if I can find Gladwell on the net somewhere - it would be interesting to hear him after reading him. Have a Merry Christmas and a wonderful New Year in 2009!
Thanks for the explanation, Sharon. My husband and his late wife purposely started their kids in school a year late and it paid off for the kids. My daughter was always the youngest (and most immature) in her class and I can look back and see that it created difficulties for her.
Great book! I just finished it last night. I loved the way he ended with the story of his family and the gifts they gave him!
BTW Sharon, I do beleive you have your 10,000 hours of blogging in!
kk
p.s. me too.
Shirley - thanks for the true life exzperiences of both sides.
Kristal - yes, he really points out that no one does it by themselves - we all need a community and/or a helpinhg hand. You have your 10,000 hours, too!
