We've had interesting posts about logos in signatures, advertisements in signatures and designations in signatures. In my post yesterday about ranch style homes, there were dozens of comments, and responses were definitely regional in response. I found it helpful to know where the person who was responding was from. Some had it in their signature, and others included it in the comment. Still others left no clue. I did click on their names to see where they were located, but most readers - whose patience is taxed just going through all the comments - don't have the time to do that, but would still like to know.
In one or two cases, even clicking to their profile page didn't tell me which city they were in. County? yes - but how many agents or potential customers know where particular counties are in a state? You DO want to be found, don't you? You DO want referrals and new clients, don't you?
It's easy enough to add your location, and it will even print on the same line, so that you're not adding to the number of pages one must scroll through.
For you statistical people, or should I say, analytical people, here are the stats (eliminating multiples, or course):
39% had their location in their signature (14/36)
39% referred to their location in their post (14/36)
22% had no reference to their area
I've referenced below those who have their location in their signature - and before you try to click on them, the links don't work. I just did a "cut and paste" from their comments.

Kaye - I noticed in your last comment. Good for you!
Renee - you've been doing it long enough that I associate you with Las Vegas - which of course means that when I think Las Vegas I think of you. It's not good to remember an agent you've met and want to refer to, but don't remember where the agent is located! I remember some years ago a CRS agent who did a fantastic job of sending out regular postcards to the agents she'd met, and I definitely remembered her and would refer to her - but nothing tied the agent to a place. It's much easier now with the web.
Sharon,
I have only been a part of the AR community for a little over a week and initially my signature did not show where I am from, but after a few days I started noticing other agents with their city/state at the end of their names and I thought it was a great idea, so I immediatly added it to mine. So I think it is a grea idea just as long as contact info isn't a part of the signature, that way it doesn't come off as blog spam.
Great post!
Sharon,
I also rated this post, if it helps. I find it so much easier to know where people are from without having to look them up. It helps on our perspective of what they are saying also:)
Sharon,
Just added my city. Not sure if I should add my designations and/or website.
Don - glad you added your location. I really don't think that's spam, and like to know where people are from, both to relate their comments to area, and to associate person and place.
Margaret - Up to you, but my call would be to add a few of your designations. If someone wants to go to your website, it's easy enough to click on your name and get the information. I think what should be in the signature line are things that could be relevant to someone quickly reading many comments - obviously location is relevant, and I think designations are relevant for credibility as well.
Thanks, Margaret. I like your stars...and Tony's...and janeAnne's...and Jeff's. I'll have to work on a customized star to give out, too.
How do you do that? Do you just make the star a small photo and insert it from the Tree?
I had my city (Columbus Ohio ) in my signature and took it out a month or so when there was a blog saying it was not right...just your name should got in the "signature link".... now I can't remember how to change it.... where do you edit it?
I like to know where people are from...
Edit figured it out - just add city etc. after my last name.
Thanks Sharon.....I looked at it last week a couple of times and couldn't figure it out even though I used to have a signature with Columbus Ohio in it.....I am now again
Maureen and Mariana -
Thanks for your comments. I don't know the answer so I'll ask the AR gods.
Sharon,
You mean like this right?
Sharon, another terrific point.
I was wondering why I was seeing more and more locations along with peoples' names. Now I know! Modified mine as well. Thanks hopefully this will help people determine who and where I am!
Hmmm... Didn't take?! Wonder why... Oh well maybe on future posts/comments. Anyway for clarification Baltimore MD Metro Area
Phil... it tells us you are an ePRO and a REALTOR® but I still have to click to find out what part of the country you are in. The thing I like about signatures is when someone says "We don't do it that way here" I know where here is without clicking. Some of us write (carry on the conversation) more with proper nouns than others of us.. Jeff Turner did a great blog about using pronouns recently wish I had a link but I don't and maybe it would be wrong for me to use it in the comments on Sharon's blog anyway... my point is I don't have to say Columbus Ohio or Central Ohio as much in conversations in comments on Active Rain blogs now that I have put my city and that I am a REALTOR® in the signature.
I am a very geographic kind of person... when I read anything about real estate I want to know where they are coming from literally.
I do like REALTOR® or real estate agent in a signature... I know an ePRO, a CRS, an ABR, a GRI is a REALTOR® because I are one, but I wonder if other non REALTORS® necessarily read them as that's aREALTOR®. I would bet a lot of the stagers, lenders, etc. don't even realize when they see ePRO, CRS, GRI that it means the person is a REALTOR® rather than a real estate licensee who is not a member of NAR.
You see real estate opinions from lenders on Active Rain too, appraisal info, legal advice... all kinds of fun stuff and often they do not have geographic info in their Active Rain signature... Sorry Sharon and Phil.. to go on and on. I love knowing where people are coming from with their opinions.
edit typo... Phil Cross Baltimore... I clicked.
Phil - I think you need to add it right after your name in your profile.
Maureen - agreed. I find it adds more relevance to the comments to know which area the comments refer to. Interesting point about the public not knowing that we're REALTORS®.
Hmmm.... I don't know if it does or not. So I'm just posting so that I can see my signature to find out! If it's not there, I'm from Colorado Springs. Thanks!
Ohhh... not there. I need to figure out how to fix that.
