Ever wished you could pick up the phone and ask a knowledgeable friend what's happening with the latest hurricane or tropical storm? Here's the next best thing - visit Jyotika Virmani's blog. It has a conversational tone and her predictions have been right on more often than not. Jyotika has a Ph.D. in oceanography from the College of Marine Science at the University of South Florida here in St Petersburg. She did postdoctoral research on hurricanes. Forecasting hurricanes is just a hobby for Jyotika - her "day job" is as Executive Director of the Florida Coastal Ocean Observing Systems Consortium.

Sharon, maybe the good Doctor can tell us these two storms are going to just turn around.
Hi Sharon, I just saw a bulletin that Gustav is heading toward Baton Rouge and currently expected to intensify to a rated 5 ( worst possible with winds over MPH) storm and that the Governor has now called for mandatory evacuation. It is sad after all the repairs and upgrades that are underway and the potential for loss of life is still very grave. They haven't blamed the storm as yet on Bush but I suppose there will time enough the day it makes landfall.
Morning Sharon,
Timely information as we sit and wait for the up-dated of these two growing storms. I wish you and yours safety.
Frank - or hopefully, break up and go away.
William - so true. This time, though, there will be no shelters open and busses and trains started evacuating people out of the area days ahead of the anticipated landfall.
Hal - Thanks. I do prefer getting the raw data on the internet rather than listening to the varying interpretations.
That would be great - then I could decide if I'm going to show houses this weekend or get out of town and take a vacation. It's always last minute. Oh well.
Tracy - I like Jyotika's blog. She talks about the hurricanes as if they are people. With hurricanes, you never know when they'll turn sharply or even do a circle. Don't plan your vacation too far ahead of time.
