Tower of the Renaissance Vinoy Hotel - St. Petersburg, Florida

Downtown St Petersburg Florida Tower of the Renaissance Vinoy HotelTower of the Renaissance Vinoy Hotel, a luxury historic property in downtown St Petersburg, Florida

This is one of several interesting towers in downtown St. Petersburg, Florida. The style and color are typical of Florida, as is the bright blue sky, and the top of the palm tree at the base. This was built in the 1920s in the Mediterranean style of Addison Mizner, who is also known for his Florida Resort style. Most of his buildings are on the east coast of Florida, in Boca Raton and Palm Beach. Only one home in St. Petersburg can be directly attributed to Mizner, but there are many buildings done in that style. There were actually three hotels built here in south Pinellas County in this style, back in the Roaring '20s - the Vinoy Hotel, a Renaissance property, in downtown Saint Pete; the Don ceSar Hotel, a Loew's property, on St. Pete Beach; and the Roylat Hotel, now part of Stetson Law School, in Gulfport. They all bring back an era of leisure, luxury, and architectural delights.

Great photo! One thing that makes it "so Florida' is the pink color, well, at least in south Florida. I haven't been to St Pete in 15 years. When a building's design and features give you a "feeling" that always reminds you of a place, well, then I would say the architect was successful with his building.  Buildings in St Pete would just not fit in Minnesota, as I am sure the reverse it true. I doubt there are too many Georgian Revival homes there!

No Georgian Revival homes here that I know of, Jennifer.  If you haven't been here in 15 years, you probably wouldn't recognize downtown, especially along Beach Drive. It's wonderful to have the beautiful old buildings mixed in among the new.

I've only been to Florida once. But I do remember all the colors either on the buildings or in nature. A very harmonious place in my mind.

Dena,

We like it.  While our colors would be jarring up north, they often seem just right with swaying palm trees and lots of greenery.

What a nice shot! We stayed two nights at the vinoy renaissance resort and just loved it. St. Pete is great, we will be back again. Thanks.

Glad you enjoyed it, Julie. I start every weekday morning at the Vinoy - first working out, then enjoying coffee and newspaper either in the lobby with soft classical music or out on the veranda enjoying the breeze. Call me when you're back again.  By the way - we're on the inside back cover of the Vinoy magazine that is in all the guest rooms.
