I live in Florida,
but drinks don't want me.
My neighbors, the lemons and the limes - they get sliced and wedged all the time and get to show off in people's drinks.
I'm tart, too - nicely tart.
My friends down the street, oranges, get to see lots of vacationers who want frozen, fruity drinks.
Even the cherry that lives in a jar gets picked before I do.
Why doesn't anybody want me?
.............the Lonely Carambola

Hi Sharon,
I love these star fruit! First time I saw them was in HI years ago.
Hi Sharon, I had a neighbor in Fla. that grew then and I would get a few now and then. Seems I always had them in the frig. They are very interesting taste wise, certainly fun to use when entertaining and used in various decorative ways. I use to chop them and use as a topping for sorbets. Big lemon ,orange and pineapple sorbet lover. But I also ate the star fruit plain most of the time in a fruit bowl when mixed with strawberries and bananas, just the way the were. If you ever had one that was more tart than sweet, you won't forget the taste anytime soon, lol.
Sharon, I've seen these little guys at Whole Foods and guess now I'll have to try one!
Ok, I've seen these at the grocery store on several occasions so now I'm going to have to pick some up so that we can taste them! Poor little carambola!
~Renae
Lynda - I didn't see them in Hawaii but they do grow here in this area.
William - I've always eaten them by themselves or with other fruits - and used them as food decoration. I'll have to try them with sorbet - thanks for the suggestion.
Patricia - can't believe you've missed the pleasure. Do try one.
Renae - try it a slice at a time.
I love carambolas, I usually get the at the flee market
10 for $2
unbelievable price and they are grown right here in our backyards
Anne
Anne - an even better price is to have a carambola tree in your back yard. One of my listings on Coquina Key has delicious carambolas growing out back.
Sharon, I think we should take this unique fruit and make it the official Active Rain Star! They are so pretty when used to show off when entertaining.
Dear Sharon,
What makes you a top refferer on AR and what exactly is that.
I'm pretty new to AR, so I hope you can help me?
Please visit my blog when you get a chance, and any comment is greatly appreciated!
Best regards,
Anoir
Margaret - are you coming to CyberStars in Orlando? If you are, I'll bring you a carambola. Whether or not Active Rain adopts it, you and I can have it as "Our Star".
Anoir - I'm not sure what you mean by "top refferer" - I'm the top agent in Florida and 2nd nationally because I've accumulated an appropriate number of points. You do that be continually blogging and commenting on other people's blogs. I did visit your blog - you need to decide who you are blogging to and what response you want. Posting about new listings in your area might attract prospective buyers, who generally won't comment much. To attract the interest of other agents, you need to write about things that matter to them.
Sharon, I will there. Looking forward to "our star'' with the rest of the CyberStars in Orlando.
Awwwww Sharon... I will have one... cute post
Shirley - thanks. The carambola feels a bit more wanted now.
Margaret - so anxious to see you again!
What a cute post! Food for thought: The forgotten fruit originates from Sri Lanka and the Moluccas in India. There are nine different varieties of the fruit and the flavor varies from very sour to slightly sweet. The health benefits of the fruit are that the citrus peel not only reduces cholesterol, it also contains antioxidants which may help prevent the formation of blood clots, a major cause of both heart attack and stroke. The skin is rich in flavonoids which its health benefits are too long to mention.
Diane - thanks for adding all the health benefits of the carambola. We do eat the peel, so now I'll encourage my husband to eat more of them to help reduce his cholesterol and prevent blood clot formation. Thanks again!
