Buy a Slip - Get a House

Most of the marinas here in the Tampa Bay area are no longer renting slips but are selling "dockominiums" many of which are $200,000 and up, plus the monthly maintenance fee, of course. So, for $700,000 you can buy a waterfront pool home with your own dock/slip behind your house.

Dockominiums aren't much hotter than Condominiums here at the moment, so I'm not sure why marina owners are making renters move and then leaving the slips empty. Doesn't seem to make economic sense in the short run.

There is a neighborhood that has boat slips - 45 minute idle to the bay and another 20ish minutes past that?  I'd rather have the boat on a $5,000 trailer than a $70,000 boat dock.

Chris - I guess it depends on how big your boat is, how often you use it, how long it takes from your dock to the Gulf, whether you work on it yourself ... and whether you want to watch the dolphins at play when you're not out on your boat. There's no one right answer. It depends.

Sharon- Here they are very hot too right now! Dock space is so scarce yet in demand! Supply and demand, never fails us! Katerina

Katerina - a lot of developers here were buying up the marinas when the market was hot - less and less slips available but the majority of boaters still want to rent a slip rather than buy one.

I think its all relative. I sold a condo to a client just to buy the boat slip. He spent well over 600K.

Rebecca - we see quite a bit of that, too.

Maybe we should sell the house and live on the boat!

Dan - or rent the house and keep the slip for your boat ...
