Peeling The Onion: Part II Getting to Know Someone is Like Peeling an Onion

We all get first impressions. How someone looks, a phrase or question we heard them say, the look in their eyes. Some of us make judgments based on that, and never peel the next layer of the onion.

When you read post after post, month after month, you often get deeper into the core of the onion. They either confirm or counter your first impression - but you do know more about that onion now.

When we meet someone, look them in the eye, see their mannerisms, see how their words fit into their overall being - we've peeled away yet another layer.

And if, perchance, we can sit alone with them beside the water, or in front of the fireplace, and have unrushed time to just talk with each other, away from the influences of other people - yes, there goes another layer of the onion.

Maybe I'll keep an onion on my desk to remind me not to judge prematurely. No - I'll take a picture of an onion, and put THAT on my desk.

Sharon this post reminds me of Shrek!!! I love that movie. Anyway you are so right. We ALL make our assumptions based on initial contact. AS more and more layers peel away we may be surprised to find we were wrong. Sometimes that's agood thing and sometimes not so good.

Nice bit of philosophy. Yea its easy to judge to early. Then again, they might not even know whom they are or don't want to know. Its really when it gets tough that you can really see what that onion is made off.

I only like those sweet onions.  It is good to take the time to know our prospects/clients.  If we don't listen to their wants and needs, then we cannot truly give them the type of service most expect.  Some people make you cry -- just like onions -- I try to find sweet clients.  With rare exception, I have avoided the rotten apples!

Sharon...

I spend my life trying not to assume anything about anyone or anything.

It's much more FUN to peel the onion.

Oh...I think it's probably a good idea to take the picture instead of using the real thing :)

TLW...ROAR!

So true.....I learned that early on in Ann Arbor, people with money where berkenstocks and drive old cars. LOL Good idea on the picture vs the real thing.

Bryant - so true. You never know which way it will go.

Lloyd - yes, in good times everyone can be generous. Tough times show character.

Joan -  life is so much more joyous when you can stay with the sweet and avoid the rotten.

TLW - I still see you having fun in the fountain! Keep having fun and being true to yourself.

Missy - sounds like they're the Millionaires Next Door.,
