St Petersburg Florida Downtown Waterfront - how will the voters vote?

Downtown St Petersburg Florida waterfrontDowntown St Petersburg Florida

is one of the largest - and in my opinion also one of the most beautiful - public waterfronts in the U.S. Nearly five miles of parkland keep the waterfront open and visible to the public. Yes, there are wonderful indoor and outdoor restaurants and shops and museums and residences - but they don't block the view. There are over 350 events a year in these waterfront parks, from art shows to music concerts, as well as all the daily uses, for walking or sitting or playing soccer or exercising your dog.

What's really unique is that this waterfront parkland is truly protected. Since 1903 when the land was given to the city, any sale or long-term lease must be approved by the voters in the city - a very protective group, I'll add.

Al Lang FieldAl Lang Field (now known as Progress Energy Park) has been the site of spring training for years. The Tampa Bay Rays (once known as the Devil Rays) announced this week that they'd like to have a new stadium right here by the water - with occasional home runs going out into the bay.

I wonder how the voters will vote.

For me, I've always enjoyed being out in the open, looking beyond the ball field to Tampa Bay, watching the games, eating hot dogs and enjoying the weather. I haven't enjoyed being "cooped up" in Tropicana Field. And what a wonderful way to show off our wonderful home to the entire world.

On the other hand, I also deeply treasure our waterfront parks. How much more intrusive would a new stadium be? Hopefully we wouldn't lose our continuous miles of sidewalk along the bay, nor part of the track for the Grand Prix when it races here in the spring.

I wonder how the voters will vote.

Have you seen the site plan, Sharon ? I can't imagine blocking the view or the city allowing that.

Hi, Missy,  It would be an open air stadium intended to have a view for all the attendees. It would have a furlable sail of some sort for rain. Supposedly on the same site, but I haven't seen specifics - maybe on Nov 28. St Pete Times had an article but photo is current, not future. The current parking lot to the north of the existing Al Lang Field would become green park. Parking would be in a multi-story garage on the site of current Tropicana Field 10 blocks west, and trolley shuttles would take people to the games. It really isn't whether the "city" will allow it, it's truly whether the "people" or "voters" will allow it.

Patricia - thanks for your comments on the photos. We do have a unique waterfront, but so many people say that it's nice to show it. Wish you were here to enjoy it.

Sharon - Indeed, the photos are great! St Petersburg is in a unique location, being on the tip of the peninsula - there is so much coastline!

If the new ballpark gets approved, I will be very disappointed.  Instead of developing shopping at Tropicana Field. Why not develop an outdoor shopping plaza at Progress Energy Field instead? At least, one could go into a shop and cool off.  I cannot imagine thousands of baseball fans taking a shuttle from the Trop parking garage 10 blocks away. Especially in the summer humidity. Not to even mention an open air ball field in summer.  Way to humid and hot!  It works in San Francisco but it would not work here. Kinda a neat idea. Completely unrealistic. What is so wrong with Tropicana Field?  Fix it up! It makes so much more sense. Plus, the parking is already there.
