Keys to Your Castle - or Home

Jim Lee just wrote about rekeying locks when you buy a new home. That brought to mind the tradition that Julie Holt, our title company and closer, brings to each closing. She's originally from England, and that's where the tradition started. For good luck, she insists that a woman from the selling side pass the keys to a woman on the buying side, left hand to left hand. This goes back to when families would leave a castle, and pass their entire huge ring of keys to whoever was going to be entrusted with its care. It's a nice tradition, with some luck, to start your new home journey.

Sharon, that does sound like a cool tradition. I remember someone telling me once that the seller would pass a clump of dit to the buyer at the closing ceremony. Don't know how true that is.

Andrew - I'd rather have keys than dirt.  Strange wedding tradition we saw in Switzerland - the bride had to wash her husband's socks on a washboard!

Maybe rekeying the house for the buyer would be a good practical gift.  Passing the keys would make an awesome picture for the trophy wall.

Sharon, I have no contribution to this conversation as you already know I have back history with deadbolts keys and locking innocent children out of houses.

Vicky - that would be a practical gift - and perhaps subtly branded keys...  I gave up my trophy wall years ago, but maybe one featuring clients wouldn't be too bad.

Barbara Jo - always good to hear from you.

Chris - now that you mention it, I do remember.

It's amazing that I raised them to adulthood without tragedy.

Chris - I think the same about my kids - who reached adulthood without tragedy, and without permanent psychological damage - and they turned into responsible, caring human beings. I'm lucky.
