Band Width and Storage Space

Lately Active Rain has been having some issues with slow response, and today the formatting is gone from posts and comments. I wonder if the numerous videos now being posted is taking up huge amounts of bandwidth or storage space...

Comments

Sharon, I have noticed the site slowing down also.  I would not be surprised if they are challenged with the number of people using the service at any given time.  I am a member of another forum and that site slows WAY down when you exceed 1500 viewers online at once.

Sharon, was really slow this morning. And have noticed same off and on for the last few weeks... at night. Donno about the video question, but it's a good one. What's Caleb got to say about it?

thanks

Regarding the videos, I don't think they're stored on AR's system since most use an embed link. They would use bandwidth ... if I understand what bandwidth is.

The system was extremely slow earlier this morning.

Thanks for the confirmation about the site.  I am never sure if it is my computer, my impatience, or with the site I am visiting.  Wish I were more of a techie...

I don't think (I am not a techie) it is the linked videos, but I believe the number online is affecting AR's current servers. See number online, and I believe it is the reason AR is selling ad space so that they can improve the servers handling our volume (ain't cheap).

I have noticed the slow down as well but didn't know what to attribute it too. I will be interested in the AR gods' response.

Sharon: It is likely the number of "hits." When photos. graphics and links are posted each "file" opened equates to a hit (or so I learned long ago). Can you imagine the number of "hits" Active Rain receives on an hourly basis?

I'll be the issue has to do with servers.

Something sure is happening. I have posted several comments and none of them stck. No point in overwriting, as they may not stick to your post/

Sharon I thought it was me.   Let us know what you find out here maybe some of the Caleb / AR founders / moderators can shed some light on it for us all...  I think Sam Miller may be on to something

I have noticed this as well Sharon, do you think it's my widgets? LOL!  (Big Smile)  Where's the comment from the rain gods and gate keeper here? :-)

I noticed the speed is gone too Sharon. I think as we approach 50,000 members, we might be sucking bandwidth at a higher rate than their current system was prepared to handle.

Sharon - Many of us have noticed it slowing down the last few days but it appears to be back up to speed now! I will pray to the gods of the internet that this remains! We all need our daily ActiveRain fix!!!

I'm with Elaine, I don't think the videos are stored on A/R, but the pictures are and they might take up a lot of space. I do see them needing to upgrade in the next couple months though and hope we don't have to much down time during the upgrade.
