Are you a Hurricane Host or a Hurricane Guest?

If you have to evacuate your home when a hurricane's coming because you're in an evacuation zone, let me tell you:

  • Public shelters are the pits (but better than nothing/nowhere)
  • You may not get to the nearest "safe" city because roads are crowded and/or flooded
  • You had better get out, because you may not be able to later
  • Fill your cars with gas because you may not be able to get any later.

There's comfort - and sometimes fun - in numbers. In your circle of friends or relatives, who lives on high ground,l in a non-evacuation zone? Sure would be nice if they offer shelter in their home to friends who have to evacuate. If you're a guest, think of bringing foods that don't need refrigeration or heating; beverages (adult type would be nice); pillows and blankets; propane for the barbecue grill; lots of water; extra clothes; cell phones and extra batteries; portable radio for weather reports;

a sense of cooperation, and most of all, a sense of humor! It will be appreciated.

Sharon - I'm one that has to evacuate and usually to my parents' house - great tips, especially about taking extra food.  (it's not good to take little things for granted)

We're certainly hoping all of you don't have to go through it again any time soon. Wanted to thank you again for taking the time to comment on something we recently did. It was most appreciated.

Sharon you have me thinking.  Are you offering your home as a "safe haven" or are you offering suggestions based on your own evacuation experience(s)?

If the former, I will take you up on it should the occasion arise and I can make it up from Fort Myers in time!

Ines -

You're lucky to have parents nearby. It's hard enough to have supplies on hand for your own emergencies, so when several others come too it's good if they add to the supplies.

Gary -

Thank YOU for commenting. We're nearly half way through hurricane season, and hope also that we don't have a repeat of 2004. Usually September is the worst month, so we'll keep our fingers crossed.

Katerina -

The more information we can pass on, the better. Feel free to add a link to your financial post, if you'd like.

Ed -

While I wasn't offering my home as a public shelter, you should know that YOU are always welcome, whether there's a threatening hurricane or not. I didn't know you had a place in Ft. Myers. That's close enough that you should come up for lunch one day!

p.s.  We're in the zone that needs to evacuate, since we're on the water.
