Why are you Homeless?

St Petersburg has a variety of magnet schools, one of which is Perkins Elementary, a magnet school for the arts. They offer a multimedia course in the primary grades. Andy Levy, a second grader, placed third in the state in a video contest last year, when he was in first grade, with a comedy about his little brother. This year he turned to a more serious documentary and won first place. His topic: homelessness. 

Andy saw homeless people on his way to school every day and had questions about them. Who were they? Why were they there? He and his Dad went to "tent city" to interview some homeless. Here's a link to his winning video. Sorry - you'll have to endure a 17 second commercial before getting his 3 minute video.

It's pretty amazing for  an 8 year old to do a documentary like this. His conclusion - he's glad HE has a home.

The kid is heading for politics, that's for sure!  His parents must be very proud of him.  Good grief and only in 2nd grade!  What's he going to do to top this one?

Ashley, Sue and Kristal - thank you for taking the time to view it. So much for how "bad" Florida public schools are!  With kids like this, we don't need to wonder how our country will fare in the future.  He should create a blog so we can all follow him - as a matter of fact, I think I'll send him a note to that effect.

Sharon this child has made a pretty powerful video and probably doesn't even realize it. Perhaps the news media should pick up on it and let more people see what he did and saw. As I get older I can see how easy it is for some-folks to become homeless. It can happen basically overnight! Thanks for the humbling article!

Danny - I think he has a pretty good Dad, too - when asked questions about Why, he suggested they go and ask them. Not every parent would take a child to a tent city to see first hand what's happening and ask about it.
